TREND ANALYSIS OF MIGRATION DATA IN THAILAND 2019-2023 8 RECENT INTERNAL MIGRATION FLOWS FIGURE 2: RECENT INTERNAL MIGRANTS BY AGE GROUP AND SEX The distribution of male and female recent internal migrants across age groups were similar, with males typically migrating internally more than females. However, between the ages of 15 and 24 years old, females migrated more than males in all years besides in 2020. For example, in 2019, 17.2 per cent of recent internal migrants were female within this age group while 13.8 per cent were male. Similarly in 2023, 15.6 per cent of recent internal migrants were female compared to 12.0 male. However, from 2022 onwards, both male and female recent internal migrants in the 60-plus age group began to increase as COVID-19 vaccinations became more widely available and other health related challenges of the pandemic subsided. Most recent internal migrants in Thailand were Thai nationals, which also included Tai Yai people, also known as Shan people, concentrated in the north of Thailand. Myanmar nationals accounted for a small proportion of recent internal migrants ranging from 4.0 per cent in 2019 to 4.6 per cent in 2023. 2021 saw the fewest recent internal migrants from Myanmar (1.9%), likely due to mobility restrictions within Thailand.
